Maya Bay – Paradise on Earth (Thailand)

After a year of waiting to visit Thailand, I finally accomplished my goal. I have been dreaming about visiting the secret location from Leonardo DiCaprio’s film, The Beach, ever since I watched it for the first time. Thailand is a country where you can escape society and travel to places of pure isolation like Maya Bay.

The Journey Thus Far:

-23 hours of international flying 

-1 hour domestic flight from Bangkok to Phuket

-1.5 hour minibus ride from the Phuket airport to the ship port 

-2 hour ferry ride to Koh Phi Phi (Phi Phi Island)

-1 hour wooden boat ride from Phi Phi Islands to the small island formation where the famous beach is located

After all this, we finally made it to Maya Bay, the heavenly location where The Beach was filmed. 

The Beach

This is the secret location where a group of world travelers created a functional community amongst themselves and lived in isolation from modern society. After the film came out, this location became a landmark that was sought out by world travelers to visit and explore.

This location is a private isolated inlet that has crystal clear aquamarine waters, white sand beaches, and a view like none other. There are many smaller surrounding islands that we visited as well, including one of the most magnificent lagoons I have ever laid eyes upon. I have never in my life seen water as clear and blue as this place. Of the locations we visited during our island-hopping adventure, this was by far my favorite. 

We swam and snorkeled for hours at these different locations, while enjoying life to the fullest.

This small chain of islands is truly heaven on earth. It felt surreal being there; a paradise-like environment that made me want to stay forever. This place alone continues to pressure me to move to Thailand immediately. 

Another location that we passed on our way back to Koh Phi Phi was Viking Cave. Originally discovered by Scandinavian Vikings, this cave provided another addition to the laundry list of places in Thailand that held incredible natural beauty.

This day and the moments spent here will forever linger in my mind. For all the travelers visiting Thailand, this island-hopping experience is an absolute must. Adventure on!
